Chemistry 11: Nomenclature Unit- Nov 29-Dec 10

Tuesday Dec 10:
We took up the oxyanions exercise (p. 11),  we took the quiz then finished acids (with organic acids) Then we took up the  acid practice (p. 14).  We did an overview of all the nomenclature (p. 15) and then worked on Review
homework:
Test is approx 45 questions and 45 marks;  all written (formulas and names).  It will be a 45 min test.  Then we will start the next unit. 

Thursday Dec 5:
We took up the oxyanions exercise (p. 9-10)  and anions with Hydrogen (p. 10).  Then we covered acids (p. 12-13).
homework:
Be ready for a short quiz next class (covering complex ions,  hydrates and oxyanions)

Do practice on oxyanions (p. 11), acids (p. 14) .  Make sure you memorize the 5 "root ions" and the 3 rules for alterations of the roots.

Tuesday Dec 3:
We took up the homework exercises from last day (p. 3,4,7)
Then we covered polyatomic ions (p. 6),  hydrates (p. 6) and we did an exercise on oxyanions (p. 9- 1st half of p. 10) in groups.
homework:
Be ready for a short quiz next class (covering p. 4 and 7)
Do practice on polyatomic ions (p. 7-8), hydrates (p. 8)  and complete the chart on oxyanions (top of p. 10 )

Fri Nov 29:
We started a new nomenclature package with covering ionic vs. molecular compounds, binary molecular compounds, binary ionic compounds and ionic compounds with multi-valent metals (p. 1-2, 5 for notes)
homework:  Do practice ex. on p. 3-4, p. 7 (top 2/3 of page only).


 IMPORTANT DATES:
During the unit, we will have little quizzes most days except Tuesday Dec 3.

Science 10: Light and Reflection Unit - Nov 11-Dec 10

B:  Mon Dec 9) G: Tues Dec 10 : 
Reflection test
homework:  complete p. 2 in new package on rearranging equations and complex conversions. (period G:  also do the section on p. 4 on Sine).

(No class for B on Wed Dec 4)/  G: Thurs Dec 5  
We had a short lesson on sine (p. 3, new package),  then had class time to do p. 2 of NEW Refraction package on rearranging equations and complex conversions.  Then we had a introduction to Refraction (p. 5)  then did study for the Reflection test.
PERIOD B TEST IS MOVED TO MONDAY DEC 9 (Even if there is school on Wednesday, we will not do the Test on Wednesday,  we will do a lesson instead).
PERIOD G TEST WILL BE MOVED TO TUESDAY DEC 10.
Homework:  Study for Reflection Test
To be finished for the class after the test:  p. 2,  p.4 sine exercises.

B:  Mon Dec 2/  G: Tues Dec 3
We went over the homework (p. 501), then started some preparation for our refraction unit (new notes package p. 1-2).  Time was given in class to complete p. 2 on Rearranging equations and doing complex conversions.  After the work, students were given time to do Reflection Test Review.
Homework:  Do p. 2 of NEW Refraction package on rearranging equations and complex conversions,  then do study for the test.

B:  Thurs Nov 28/  G: Fri Nov 29
We went over the curved mirror diagrams from p. 8 and 9,  then we did a lesson/note on advantages/disadvantages and uses of curved mirrors (p. 10-11)
Homework:  Do textbook questions on p. 501 Q #2,3,5,6,7,9,10

B:  Tues Nov 26/  G: Wed Nov 27
We did a lesson on how to draw diagrams showing images formed with convex and concave mirrors (notes p.  6-7).  Those students that were absent for the curved mirrors lab did that lab in the 2nd half of class.
Homework:  Do ALL diagrams on p. 8;  Do 1st and 3rd diagram on p. 9.
Complete focal length of a curved mirror lab and hand in. 

B:  Fri Nov 22/  G: Mon Nov 25
We did a lesson on parts of concave and convex mirrors.  Then we did a lab activity on finding the focal length of a curved mirror. (p. 6)
Homework:  For those in class: no homework.
For those period B students that were absent,  copy curved mirror note on p. 6 from the website so that you are ready to do the lab next class

B:  Wed Nov 20/  G: Thurs Nov 21
We had a quiz on p. 1-2 notes.  We did a lesson that covered Laws of reflection,  diffuse vs. specular reflection and how to draw how the eye sees an image in a plane mirror, and describing image characteristics using SALT.(p. 3-4)
Homework:  .Drawing Practice p.  4-5

B:  Mon Nov 18/  G: Tues Nov 19
We did a short lesson on the ray model of light (p. 2-3).  Then we did a lab on Reflection of Light in plane mirrors.
Homework:  .Study notes p. 1-2 for quiz next class.


B:  Nov 11/  G: Tues Nov 12
We did the introduction to light in a new notes package.  p. 1 (textbook material is 11.1 in chapter 11).  We did the pH/indicators lab and the analysis.  Marks were posted for the report card.
Homework:  Textbook Q. p. 469  Q #1,4,5,9,11.  Optional: Read 11.1 in textbook.

Chemistry 11-Bonding Unit-Nov 8-Nov 26

Mon Nov 25:
We went over homework answers and reviewed for the bonding test.  Then we wrote the lab quiz for the like dissolves like lab.  Bonding test is next class.  Once you finish your review, try the bonding written part practice test.  You should be able to complete this in 40 minutes.  (There will be 30 multiple choice questions in addition).

Thurs Nov 21:
We finished the note on bonding and properties of solids (p.14)  then did the Like dissolves Like lab.  Students worked on the analysis questions together in class.  Lab quiz will be next class.  
If you were absent for the Lab, get a copy of the lab sheet on this site, from a friend, or from me.  Get results from a class mate and prepare for the lab quiz.
homework:  Prepare for lab quiz (see lab sheet posted for a description of the lab quiz and its topics).  Study for the Bonding Test (Wed. next week)

Tues Nov 19:
We reviewed intermolecular bonding as well as the other types.  We covered metallic bonding (p. 13)

Thurs Nov 14:
We watched a video that explained intermolecular bonding,  then worked on the intermolecular bonding exercise on p.11-12 of notes.
homework:  finish p. 11 -12 in notes,  study intermolecular bonding notes to learn this material.  Be ready for polarity, drawing molecules quiz on Mon Nov 19 

Tues Nov 12:
We completed the polarity exercise and took it up (p. 8-9) and wrote the quiz (on p. 1-4).
Intermolecular bonding was introduced.

We covered Lewis theory of covalent bonding and drew structures of molecules (p. 5-6)
homework:  do drawing exercises I and II on p. 5 and 6
Quiz originally scheduled is postponed.

Mon Nov 4:
We finished the bonding notes on p. 2-4 regarding classifying bonds by difference in electronegativity, and ionic bonding.  Marked tests were passed back.
homework:  do exercises on the bottom of p. 2 and p. 4 in new bonding unit package.

We took up the Gibbs free energy questions, did a concept map of the Unit.

Tues Nov 26:
We took up the Entropy questions and then did a lesson on Gibbs Free Energy (p. 15-16).  This completes the material that will be on the Test.  The class received a set of practice multiple choice questions to prepare for the upcoming test.  (Practice Written part is on this website).
homework:
Do Gibbs Free energy Textbook Q Bundle 9.  Energy Test is confirmed for Dec 2.
The lab previously scheduled for Thursday Nov 28 is cancelled.

Fri Nov 22:
Hess Law lab and lab analysis.

Wed Nov 20:
We took up ΔHf tables questions and BDE questions.  Lesson was on Entropy.

Mon Nov 18:
We took up old homework questions (textbook Q bundles 4, 5 and 6)
We covered using Heats of formation tabled to calculate heats of reactions (p.  11).  Green ΔHf  tables were distributed.  (You can pick one up on the front bench of the classroom anytime).
Then we covered using Bond Dissociation Energy data to determine ΔH for reactions (p. 12-13)
homework:

  • ΔHtables practice : Textbook bundle 7  Use the green tables I have given you.  If you are missing a value, just google it or use the book tables in the appendix.  Be aware that the green tables are slightly different from the textbook values so your answers will be close but not exactly the same as the text.
  • BDE practice: p. 13 odd questions only

Thurs Nov 6:
We briefly discussed the phase change-calorimetry calculation (p. 4-5),  Covered Chemical calorimetry calculations (p. 6-7),  and covered Standard Enthalpys for Standard reactions (p.8).  We also took up the multiple choice on the bonding test.

Check your answers for phase change problems (p. 5) by checking the solutions on this website.

Do  problems # 1,2,4,5 on worksheet p. 5.  Attempt all four problems even if you are not getting the correct answers.  There are full solutions on the class resources.  Don't peek until you have done the problems.

We covered the new Energy unit notes p. 1- p. 1-2
