Chemistry 12: Energy Unit Nov 1-Dec 2

Mon Dec 2:
Energy Test written
homework:
No homework.

Thurs Nov 28:
We took up the Gibbs free energy questions, did a concept map of the Unit.
homework:
Study for the test on Monday

Tues Nov 26:
We took up the Entropy questions and then did a lesson on Gibbs Free Energy (p. 15-16).  This completes the material that will be on the Test.  The class received a set of practice multiple choice questions to prepare for the upcoming test.  (Practice Written part is on this website).
homework:
Do Gibbs Free energy Textbook Q Bundle 9.  Energy Test is confirmed for Dec 2.
The lab previously scheduled for Thursday Nov 28 is cancelled.

Fri Nov 22:
Hess Law lab and lab analysis.
homework:
Do Entropy questions p. 15 pkg and Textbook Q Bundle 8

Wed Nov 20:
We took up ΔHf tables questions and BDE questions.  Lesson was on Entropy.
homework:
For Friday be ready for lab on p.6-11 next class.
For Tuesday do Entropy questions p. 15 pkg and Texbook Q Bundle 8

Mon Nov 18:
We took up old homework questions (textbook Q bundles 4, 5 and 6)
We covered using Heats of formation tabled to calculate heats of reactions (p.  11).  Green ΔHf  tables were distributed.  (You can pick one up on the front bench of the classroom anytime).
Then we covered using Bond Dissociation Energy data to determine ΔH for reactions (p. 12-13)
homework:

  • ΔHtables practice : Textbook bundle 7  Use the green tables I have given you.  If you are missing a value, just google it or use the book tables in the appendix.  Be aware that the green tables are slightly different from the textbook values so your answers will be close but not exactly the same as the text.
  • BDE practice: p. 13 odd questions only

Friday Nov 14 PD day

Wed Nov 13:
We did the molar heat of fusion of ice experiment and the lab quiz.  Makeup lab quiz will be
homework:
Do textbook questions bundle 5 (depicting delta H 4 ways)  and bundle 6 (Hess' law calculations)

Mon Nov 11:
We We covered p.9 (depicting enthalpy changes for reactions in 4 ways) and p. 10 (Hess' law calclations).
homework:
For Wednesday:  make sure you are able to do phase change calorimetry problems (p. 4-5).  Lab quiz will be based on those calculations.
For Monday Nov 18-  Do textbook questions bundle 5 (depicting deltaΔΔΔΔΔ H 4 ways)  and bundle 6 (Hess' law calculations)

Thurs Nov 6:
We briefly discussed the phase change-calorimetry calculation (p. 4-5),  Covered Chemical calorimetry calculations (p. 6-7),  and covered Standard Enthalpys for Standard reactions (p.8).  We also took up the multiple choice on the bonding test.
homework:
Check your answers for phase change problems (p. 5) by checking the solutions on this website.
Do Textbook Question bundle 4  (bundle 3 is optional)
Our lab-quiz on Wednesday Nov 13 is based on p. 5 calculations.

Tues Nov 4:
We covered the new Energy unit notes p. 3-4 on Enthalpy of phase changes,  doing complex calorimetry problems.
homework:
Do  problems # 1,2,4,5 on worksheet p. 5.  Attempt all four problems even if you are not getting the correct answers.  There are full solutions on the class resources.  Don't peek until you have done the problems.

Fri Nov 1:
We covered the new Energy unit notes p. 1- p. 1-2
homework:
Textbook Q: (See p. 18 of notes,  Textbook questions bundles 1. and 2.)
Please note:  The quizzes in this unit are LAB quizzes and are therefore not eligible for dropping.  Please make sure you keep up with the work. and come promptly for help if you are struggling.
