Tues Nov 26:
We took up the Entropy questions and then did a lesson on Gibbs Free Energy (p. 15-16).  This completes the material that will be on the Test.  The class received a set of practice multiple choice questions to prepare for the upcoming test.  (Practice Written part is on this website).

We covered using Heats of formation tabled to calculate heats of reactions (p.  11).  Green ΔHf  tables were distributed.  (You can pick one up on the front bench of the classroom anytime).
Then we covered using Bond Dissociation Energy data to determine ΔH for reactions (p. 12-13)

  • ΔHtables practice : Textbook bundle 7  Use the green tables I have given you.  If you are missing a value, just google it or use the book tables in the appendix.  Be aware that the green tables are slightly different from the textbook values so your answers will be close but not exactly the same as the text.

Homework:  No homework.  Know how to analyse indicator colour/pH for the lab next class.

B: Tues Nov 5/G: Wed Nov 6
We took up the rest of p.13 (neutralization reactions), p. 15 (metals and corrosion), and then did some test review instead of doing the pH lab.  pH lab is rescheduled for the class after the unit test.  A practice test was given in class.
Homework:  study for the test.  Check your answers to the practice test on the class resources.  Bring a calculator and some homework/reading to do after you are finished.

B: Fri Nov 1/G: Mon Nov 4
Reactions lab I was passed back, we took up p. 13 (acid-base worksheet)
Homework:  pH lab next class.  Make sure you can determine pH of solutions using indicators.  You will get to use the indicators chart to do this.
Start your preparation for the test by checking over any topics that you are having difficulty with and get help/review.

B: Wed Oct 30/G: Thurs Oct 31
Mass labs were passed back, we took up p. 14 on Fossil fuels and did a lesson on Acids and bases (using an indicator chart that was distributed in class).
Homework:  Do acid base worksheet p. 13, Next class is a lab on single and double displacement.  Make sure you can recognize and write these reactions.

Quizzes from last class were passed back and we took up questions on p.10 homework.  Students did a lab on Synthesis Decomposition and Combustion reactions.  The analysis questions were done immediately after the lab (closed book).

We wrote a quiz, then took up p. 9 homework.  We had a lesson on p. 7 on single and double displacement.

Chemistry 11: Periodic Trends Unit -Oct 4-Oct 31

PERIODIC TRENDS UNIT
Mon Nov 4:
We finished the bonding notes on p. 2-4 regarding classifying bonds by difference in electronegativity, and ionic bonding.  Marked tests were passed back.

Thurs Oct 31:
We wrote the Periodic Trends test.

Tues Oct 29:
We started bonding and covered p. 1-2 on the new notes package.  Then we took up review questions for periodic Table  unit (p. 15-16 )
homework: Study for the Periodic table test.  Try the written part of 2017 test posted on my website.

Fri Oct 25:
We passed back the zodiac table assignment, the flame tests labs and took up p. 13, p.6 questions.  We did a practice assessment on periodic trends in IE, AS and EA and marked it in class.

First class back we will be doing a periodic table simulation assignment in class.  Get that assignment in advance, if you will not be at school on Tuesday.  Class time will be given on Tuesday for this Periodic table simulation assignment.

Mon Oct 7:
We got back the Matter and measurement test and took it up.  We continued the review of atomic theory with Condensed Bohr diagrams of atoms and Ion formation on p. 1-2

Mon Oct 28:
Aggregates lab quiz was written and questions were answered about the test next class.  Some review time was given.

Thurs Oct 24:
Quizzes were passed back and we talked briefly about how to apply VSEPR and polarity to larger more complex biochemistry molecules.  Then we determined melting time for 4 solids as a class before groups made observations on appearance, hardness and conductivity for the 4 samples. Observations charts were handed in.
homework:
Study Aggregates and their properties and bonding in preparation for the lab quiz next class.Those students that missed the lab will receive data and write the lab quiz next class with the other students.

Tues Oct 22:
We took up the polarity questions,  went over the format of the Aggregates lab, then had the quiz.
Students worked on practice questions on bonding in aggregates, and properties of solids from the textbook (p. 273 #2,4,5,7;  p.  276  # 1,3,4,7,8,9  and p. 12 in notes supplementary questions A,B and C)

Fri Oct 18:
We covered VSEPR worksheet p. 9-10 (answers are  on website), reviewed polarity of bonds and molecules (see self study on p. 11 if you need it),  reviewed intermolecular bonding (p.  12) and discussed bonding and properties in solids of various types (p. 13)

  • prepare for quiz next class that has:  VSEPR (like p. 9-10),  predict polarity of molecules,  assess what kinds of intermolecular bonds are present in various molecular compounds.
  • finish predicting polarity (p. 9-10)
  • Do p. 14 reviewing the 4 types of Aggregate solids/crystals

Thurs Oct 10:
We expanded our Lewis diagrams (beyond octet rule) to include polyatomic ions also.  After the quiz, students were given time to work on drawing the Lewis structures (only) on p. 9 and 10 of the notes.
homework: 
Thanksgiving - no homework.  If you want to get ahead, you should learn the names of the 5 basic shapes (linear, trigonal planar,  .... octahedral) from p. 4 chart and finish the Lewis structures on p. 9-10.
I have put some extra hybridization practice questions with full solutions on the class resources.  It is posted after the notes for this unit.
Tues Oct 8:
We took up  Hybridization homework, finished the example SF6 on p. 6.  We spent some time working on the last 2 practice molecules:  BrF5 and AsCl5.  Then we covered Lewis diagrams beyond the octet rule (bottom of p. 3).  We took up the multiple choice of the atomic structure test.  We discussed the format of the quiz next class.
homework: 
Prepare for quiz on simple VB theory and Hybridization (p.  2-6 roughly) which is next class (Thurs Oct 10.  Also try the new method of drawing Lewis diagrams on the first 6 molecules on p. 9 of your notes.

Fri Oct 4:
We took up simple VB theory practice  H2O,  HNO,  NH3,  took up one of the Hybridization homework molecules,  then we did 2 more  Hybridization examples HNO and C2Br2 p. 5-6  (CH4 example)
homework:
Use Hybridization to work out bonding in the rest of the molecules (except BrF5 and AsCl5)
Follow the format in the notes.  Memorize shapes of the hybrid orbitals for the 5 different hybridization states.

Wed Oct 2:
We finished simple VB theory (p. 2 of new notes),  started Hybridization p. 3-5  (CH4 example)
homework:  Use simple VB to work out bonding in: H2O,  HNO,  NH3 (partly done in class)
Use Hybridization to work out bonding in :BI3,  H20,  NH3
Follow the format in the notes.

Thurs Sept 26:
We got a new notes package on the bonding unit and covered the first page and a half (up to and including Br2.  Textbooks were distributed.

We wrote the Matter and measurement test.  New notes packages were distributed and we briefly reviewed atomic structure.

We did the mixtures lab quiz,  discussed separation of mixtures and test preparation.

Fri Sept 13:

Thurs Sept 26:
We took up p.  15 on transition metal ions, magnetic effects and summarized quantum mechanical model. Then we got a new notes package on the bonding unit and covered the first page and a half (up to and including Br2.  Textbooks were distributed.
homework:  Review for the test.  See notes package for practice questions dealing with configurations (notes p. 14-15) There are some good questions on p. 397.
The test:  30-35 multiple choice,  one long page of written (both sides).  See the practice test on my website.  Do this under test conditions in 40 min.
I will be available for extra help on Friday if you have questions.

Tues Sept 24:
We took up selected questions on the pink sheet (up to # 73).  We covered p. 14 (electron configurations for ions,  anomolous configurations), then had the quiz.

We covered the orbitals of the first three shells, their quantum numbers (p. 10),  Energy level diagrams for Hydrogen and other elements and the rules for electron distribution (p.11).  Marked quizzes and labs were returned.

Mon Sept 16:
We wrote the quiz covering atomic models and spectroscopy (up to Bohr model).  We did a lesson on Wave-Particle duality of the electron, Superposition, Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle,  Schrodinger Wave equation and Quantum numbers.

Thurs Sept 12:
We finished and handed in the Hydrogen Spectrum lab and had a brief lesson summarizing the contributions of the Bohr model and covering De Broglie and electron standing waves.

Tues Sept 10:
We finished the lesson on electron transitions,  Bohr model and spectroscopy (notes p. 3-4).  We covered calculations of wavelength for electron transition.  (p. 5).  Hydrogen Spectra lab sheet was handed out and lab evaluation was reviewed.
homework:  a)  Do a good copy of 4 Pre-lab Balmer calculations
b) Answering pink questions up to and including Q #19 will really help you prepare for lab quiz.
c)  Be ready for pre-lab quiz.  Constants will be provided but not formulas.

Fri Sept 6th:
We finished our discussion of Rutherford and the Gold foil experiment up until the 4 points of Bohr's atomic theory (notes p. 2-3) and electron transitions.  We did a multiple choice assessment

We took up the acid worksheet (p. 19).  We had a quiz.  (which was passed back the same class).  Then we discussed the Test on Mon.  (p. 2 of the notes package is NOT covered).  
We took up the Pre-lab questions from the ion-testing lab.  A practice test was given to prepare for the test on Monday.  Answers to the practice test, as well as the last nomenclature review (p.21) is on this website.

B:  Wed Oct 2
We took up the 1st Review worksheet (p. 21).  Then we discussed the Test on Friday.  (p. 2 of the notes package is NOT covered).  
We did the lab-work for an ion-testing lab, but did NOT do the analysis yet.
Since an Assembly will shorten our test period, the Friday Oct 4 Test will NOT include chemical formulas and names (nomenclature).
A separate mini-test on names and formulas will be on Tuesday Oct 8

G:  Tues Oct 1
We had a quiz on molecular and binary ionic formulas/names,  took up p. 17-18 on complex ion compounds. had a short lesson on acids (p. 19), we then reviewed (using a flow chart) all the types of nomenclature.  
Teacher performed demos as part I of an Ion Testing lab and we completed the Prelab questions in class.
Homework: 
Be ready for quiz Thursday on Complex ions and Acids.  
Fill in nomenclature review exercises on p. 21 of notes.
Optional:  make your own nomenclature review flow chart.

B:  Mon Sept 30/  
We had a short quiz on compounds containing complex ions.  We took up the acid homework,  did a review of nomenclature (flow chart on back page of notes) and did Part I of the Ion Testing lab.  After completing the Pre-Lab questions,  we worked on nomenclature review.
Homework:  
Review for the quiz  on p. 17-18 ( ionic compounds that contain complex ions),  finish gluing the graphic organizer (p. 23),  Do the 1st Review page of all types of nomenclature (p. 21)

B:  Thurs Sept 26/  G: Fri Sept 27 (History field trip eliminates Friday class)
We had a quiz on molecular and binary ionic formulas/names,  took up p. 17-18 on complex ion compounds. had a short lesson on acids (p. 19), then cut/pasted a graphic organizer on the back page of the note package that summarized all the different types of formulas/names/compounds.
No class for period G due to History field trip.
Homework:

B:  Tues Sept 24/  G: Wed Sept 25
We passed back the  labs,  took up the homework on p. 13-15 and did a lesson on naming/formulas of ionic compounds containing complex ions (p. 16-17).  We worked on a worksheet on complex ions (p. 17-18)
Homework:  Finish p. 17-18 on complex ions.  Study for the quiz on exercise #3 on p. 15 (molecular compounds and binary ionic compounds)


B:  Fri Sept 20/  G: Mon Sept 23
We passed back the quizzes and labs,  took up the homework on p. 10-11, and did a lesson on molecular naming/formulas (p. 12) and binary ionic naming/formulas (p. 14-15)
Homework:  Do all exercise on p. 13 and p. 14-15

B:  Wed Sept 18/  G: Thurs Sept 19
We had a short quiz, then covered bonding, ionic and molecular compounds,  and drawing Lewis Dot diagrams of molecules. (p. 10-11 in notes)
Homework:  Do all exercise on p. 10 and p. 11

Anyone who didn't finish the conductivity lab may finish at lunch 
on Wed Sep18 in room 212

B:  Mon Sept 16/  G: Tues Sept 17
We took up ion formation homework (notes p. 8-9).  We did a conductivity demo-lab , completed the sheet and handed it in.
Homework:  Study for Science Quiz on p. 1, 3-9 that will be on Wednesday.

B:  Thurs Sept 12/  G: Fri Sept 13
We took up atomic structure and Lewis Dot diagram homework (p. 4-5)  had a lesson on Simple Ion formation (p. 6-7) and also reviewed lab safety.
Homework:  Bohr diagram of Ions worksheet (notes p. 8),  do Q #3,4,5 on p. 9 of notes

B:  Tues Sept 10/  G: Wed Sept 11
We took up the homework from p. 187. (period G we finished the chemical families note)
We did a lesson that reviewed Atomic Structure (notes p. 4).
Homework:   
Complete p. 4 and p. 5 in notes package (Bohr Diagrams and Lewis Dot Diagrams)

B:  Fri Sept 6/  G: Mon Sept 9
We took up the homework from p. 178 on physical vs. chemical properties and changes,  covered in the notes: p. 1 signs of a chemical reaction,  p. 3 the periodic table (copies of the periodic table were distributed) and we did a describing activity (bottom of p. 2)
Homework:   
Textbook Q.   p. 187  #2, 3, 5 and 6
Study notes so far.(for period G,  we did NOT get all the way through the note on chemical families.  Look up on the internet the locations of the Alkali Metals,  Alkaline Earths,  Halogens and Noble Gases to answer the homework questions)

B:  Wed Sept 4/  G: Thurs Sept 5
We went over the course outline, evaluation and expectations.    Chemistry part I notes package was distributed and we covered the 1st page section on properties.
