Makeup Test for those students that missed will be Friday (Oct 4) at lunch, room 212. You will need 50 minutes for the test, so bring your lunch and eat while you write. Please come promptly
Thurs Oct 4:
Thurs Oct 4:
We wrote the Matter and measurement test. New notes packages were distributed and we briefly reviewed atomic structure.
homework: Do Atomic symbols exercise on p. 2 of the new notes package on Atomic Properties and the Periodic table.
We did the mixtures lab quiz, discussed separation of mixtures and test preparation.
homework: Prepare for the test. The written part of a past test is on this site.
Note for Those period F students who wish to go to the Climate Protest and miss the
Mixtures experiment in Period F class on Friday Sept 27:
Mixtures Experiment:
You will be able to do the Mixtures lab during class on Tuesday Oct 1
You will then do the lab quiz in the same class. Bring a calculator
Fri Sept 27:
We performed the Mixtures lab, submitted data slips.
homework: Do calculations on the Mixtures lab and make sure you understand the experiment and know how to round your answers from the calculation. Bring a calculator for the lab quiz next class.Wed Sept 25:
We took up the questions on the physical changes lab and the observations. We watched a video on separating mixtures and filled in p. 9. Lab sheet for Mixture lab was distributed.
homework: Complete p. 9 on separation methods and read Mixtures lab.
We took up the questions on Classifying matter (p.9), did the physical changes lab, making observations, and did the Lab discussion questions on the back of the lab sheet.
homework: Do questions on Physical Changes lab in preparation for next class. We wrote the Al foil lab quiz, and did a lesson on Classifying matter (p.8)
Tues Sept 17:
We took up the error analysis homework. We covered changes
in matter (p. 3). Then groups of 4 were formed to do an activity to
determine the thickness of Al foil by doing measurements and calculations.
homework: Review for Al foil lab quiz covering: doing lab
calculations, reading scales, rounding and significant digits. Bring
calculator for quiz.
Marked lab safety quizzes were returned, note on rounding
was completed (p. 4-5) and reading scales (p.7), and homework on rounding (p. 6) was taken up in
detail. We covered Error analysis (p. 10).
homework: Error Analysis Worksheet (p. 11)Wed Sept 11:
We wrote the lab safety quiz, and did a lesson on significant digits and rounding (p.
3-5).
homework: Significant digits and rounding worksheet p. 6 of notes
Mon Sept 9:
We reviewed the lab and evaluation dates for the unit. (See the list below). We collected the student safety contracts and had a lesson covering properties of matter,
SI units, accuracy vs. precision, exact numbers and reading scales (p. 1,
part of p. 2 and part of p. 3). At the end of the lesson, students worked on p. 7 worksheet on reading scales.
homework: Review lab safety for safety quiz next class, Do
Reading scales worksheet (p. 7 of notes) -please note: some of
the liquid levels on this worksheet did not photocopy well. See the note
package in the "Course Resources" if you cannot see where the
meniscus falls
We reviewed the course outline and expectations, reviewed lab safety and did a group activity on
Experimental Design.
