For ALL Students:
A muscle that doesn't exercise regularly will shrink from disuse.  Brains that don't get exercised regularly become less agile and adept.  I understand that there are additional stresses,  technology limitations and family responsibilities that can get in the way of your learning.  Nonetheless, you don't want to start next year (high school or University) with a brain that has been in dormancy for 5 months.  Its important that you keep trying.  If you have gotten behind, go back in the weekly posts to where you left off.  I will check the old quizzes, so that opportunity is still there.  Even if you can't do everything, doing something is better than doing nothing.  Fight Apathy!

Grade 10 Science:
a)  AssessmentNervous System

Chemistry 11- Solutions Unit - Mar 9-April 6

April 6 is the projected start date for all your classes to resume learning in some form.  I hope that you have followed the recommendations for the work in Chemistry and have got to the point where you have completed Concentration Problem set I (p. 7 of notes) and Problem set II (p. 8).  If you have completed that, then next week (April 6-9) will be a chance to consolidate, review and assess your understanding.  If you haven't done the concentration problems, then see my previous post detailing the work.

My tentative general plan to proceed in Chemistry as of April 6:
1.  We will move at a slower pace due  to the additional challenge of learning in an on-line format.
2.  Check my website: schieck-chem.blogspot.com at the beginning of the week to see what you need to do in Chemistry that week.
2.  At the beginning of the week I will try to post a little assessment quiz that you can try and mark yourself (for feedback and practice)
3.  Then we will cover 1-2 topics in the week.  I will experiment with a variety of formats for delivery and I will give you some practice questions.
4.  At the end of the week if there are questions (either conceptual or homework question you didn't understand) please e-mail me by Friday and I will try and address them in some format at the beginning of the following week.
5.  We are both figuring this out as we go.  I appreciate your questions and feedback (What learning formats work and which don't?)

I know these conditions are not ideal.  Do your best.  That's all you can do.  Reach out to me if there is anything I can help with.

March 23-April 6
1st week of COVID break:
a)  Do all of Questions on p. 2 in new notes (except #10 on the Exxon Valdez),
b)  Do Solvent compatibility exercise at the bottom of p. 4.  Write ALL the letters of solvents that would be appropriate to dissolve each solute.

c)  We have covered a lot of ground so far.  Use the extended break to learn and understand the material in p. 1-5.

2nd Week of COVID break:
d) Use the website to copy the notes on Calculating Concentration (p. 6)

e)  Do suggested calculations on p. 7 (Practice Set I),  and p. 8 (Practice Set II, only-not the whole page).

Fri Mar 13:

Chemistry 12: Electrochemistry (Redox) Unit- Mar 11-April 6

April 6 is the projected start date for all your classes to resume learning in some form.  I hope that you have followed the recommendations for the work in Chemistry and have got to the point where you can balance redox equations in acidic or basic conditions (notes p.  3-4).  On April 6, I will post a practice quiz on balancing and oxidation numbers that you can try (for practice, not marks).  Then you can mark it yourself to check your understanding. Then we will be continuing on in the Redox unit.
If you have not mastered Balancing redox equations yet  do that during the rest of this week so that you are ready to move forward with us. See my previous post on my website: schieck-chem.blogspot.com       to get instruction on how to do that.
If you have any questions about balancing (however minor), please don't hesitate to e-mail me.

Work for the extended break (March 23-April 6):
a)  Finish oxidation numbers worksheet on p. 2 of Electrochemistry Notes

b) Learn How to Balance Redox Equations by using either option A or option B described below.  Then do Practice Q on p. 3 of notes (  bottom left:  #2, 3, 6, 7)

Option A: Use Posted Redox Class Notes
Read notes p. 3 on balancing by Half-Reaction method Acidic Conditions and Basic conditions, referring to two examples on p. 4 which illustrate the method.

Option B:  Watch 2 videos that explain
How to balance Redox equations in Acidic solution  -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ1tKxsqV74
How to Balance Redox equations in Basic Solution -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5sDNmYCaqo
(The video method (Option B) used differs slightly from the method described in the class notes (Option A)  in two ways:
In the class notes, electrons are added first using oxidation number comparisons, then  O and H is balanced at the end of the process.
In the video,  O and H are balanced first in each 1/2 reaction, then electrons are added using charge comparisons.  These are just superficial differences;  use whichever method you prefer.

You do NOT need to cover the Bridge method.
Balancing Redox Equations is Fun!!!- Try it.

Thurs  Mar 12:
We wrote the Acids and Bases unit test
homework:
March Break

Tues  Mar 10:
Then we started Redox unit with a new package, covering oxidation numbers and balancing.
homework:

Science 10- Cells Unit - Feb 18-April 6

Starting April 6:
April 6 is the projected start date for all your classes to resume learning in some form.  I hope that you have followed the recommendations for the work in Science and have got to the point where you have done some review on our Cells Package.  If you have completed that, then next week (April 6-9) will be a chance to assess your understanding before we move on to the "Systems" section of biology.  If you haven't done the suggested review, then see my previous post detailing the work.

My tentative general plan to proceed in Science as of April 6:
1.  We will move at a slower pace due  to the additional challenge of learning in an on-line format.
2.  Check my website: schieck-chem.blogspot.com at the beginning of each week to see what you need to do in Science that week.

Some recommendations to Prepare for April 6-Get Organized:
1.  Gather your binders/folders/textbooks and organize them.  File away old notes, evaluations etc...
2.  You can set your own schedule!  Pick 4 classes to work on a day and schedule them into your agenda book.  Work on classes every other day.
3.  As you receive instructions from your various teachers, add them to one master "to-do list",  crossing them off as you accomplish each one.
4.  Make sure you have you have each teacher's website/googleclass readily accessible.
5. Don't hesitate to e-mail your teachers.  We need your feedback.

I know these conditions are not ideal.  Do your best.  That's all you can do.  Reach out to me if there is anything I can help with.

March 23-April 6:
KEEPING UP WITH SCIENCE AND LEARNING DURING THIS EXTENDED BREAK:
You've had lots of time to sleep and binge on games and movies.  Its time to restart your brain from leisure mode.  During these two weeks I would like you to do science, to maintain your progress in science.  We don't know what the future holds, but whatever work/learning you do at home now will help to build your brain/thinking (this strengthens along with everything else), and will help to get you ready for grade 11 next year (in a worst case scenario).
In the next couple of week I'd like you to do a few things over the course of the upcoming week:
a)  review cell parts and functions by watching this video:
b)  review diffusion by watching this video:
c)review mitosis by watching this video:
d)  review cancer by watching this video:

Lastly, after watching each video, spend a few minutes reviewing your notes on the topic.

Rest assured that the grade 10 science teachers do NOT intend to cram the remaining course in compressed time frame (when and if we return to class).  We will select the most important topics to cover for the remainder of the school year.  If you have any questions, I will be checking my e-mail periodically during the school day.

Why don't you start the first video now?
